Grave Marker in Virginia City, NV Cemetery

Lone Wooden Grave Marker

The Virginia City Cemetery is one of the Comstock's numerous burial places which stand as a testament to the people who came to this historic area during the Silver Boom of the 1800s. They came regardless of race, religion or color from many places and foreign lands. There were once over 35,000 residents living and toiling here, most in the mines or panning for gold and silver. Whether miners, women, gamblers, tradesmen or gunmen, those interred here now lay within the boundaries of the Virginia City National Historic Landmark. During the Victorian era these cemeteries were viewed and cared for as gardens, however time has taken its toll upon the Comstock cemeteries. Presently there is an effort to maintain and improve the conditions of the cemeteries in order to preserve this rich history for future generations. Although they are open to the public, there are also tours of the city cemetery which offers interesting historic information.
